How Do I Use Self-Leveling Concrete?

Concrete is considered the best friend of construction workers and DIY enthusiasts alike. Concrete is aesthetically pleasing, affordable and durable; it’s also fairly easy to use. The most difficult part of installing concrete yourself is making sure it’s level. That’s why so many DIYers opt to use self-leveling concrete. However, self-leveling concrete does require a bit of know-how to get it to perform properly. Let’s take a closer look at how to properly use self-levelling concrete for any project.

The most important way to ensure your self-leveling concrete works as advertised is to properly prep the surface on which you will be pouring the concrete. Any cracks, bumps or inconsistencies will cause problems and result in a surface that is not perfectly level.

Proper floor preparation means that not only does the floor have to be cleaned of any dust and debris, but any cracks or deformities have to be addressed. The simplest way to do this is to take a grinder and grind the entire floor to ensure it’s smooth. Then sweep and mop the surface right before you’re ready to apply your self-leveling concrete.

It is important to note that the surface you plan on applying self-leveling concrete on has to be completely dry. That means if it’s new concrete it needs to have completed its curing process before the self-leveling layer can be applied.

Once you have a clean surface it’s time to install a primer. The type of primer that should be used depends on the self-leveling concrete mix that you decide to use. Each type of mix usually has a primer that they suggest using. Once you have applied the primer to the project surface you’re ready for the self-leveling concrete.

One of the trickiest parts of self-leveling concrete is how quickly it dries. Of course the actual dry time varies from mix-to-mix, but most self-leveling concrete mixtures dry in as little as 20 minutes. That means you’ll have to work quickly and efficiently once the concrete has been mixed.

Level concrete is imperative for most concrete floor projects. While professional contractors can create a level surface out of any concrete mixture, self-leveling concrete is a great tool for most DIYers. Of course, when in doubt hire a professional. Visit to learn more.
